Description
This new acrylic painting I just completed is called The Lion of Baalbek and is an abstract rendition of the lion head gargoyles of the Temple of Jupiter in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, the largest sanctuary of the Roman empire. The temple itself was surrounded by 54 Corinthian columns, made of granite, of which only 5 remain. The lion gargoyles sat on top of the columns along entablatures (long horizontal beams) and this whole structure supported a massive cedar roof. When I was young, we were taught the lions were decorative, but recent evidence points to a dam like structure within the roof which collected snow in the winter and when the snow melted in the spring the valves were opened and tons of water cascaded through the mouths of these lions from 82 feet and watering one of the most fertile plains on earth. It must have been an impressive sight.
